Globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies of Coma

چکیده
Globular cluster systems of 17 elliptical galaxies have been studied in the Coma cluster of galaxies. Surface-brightness fluctuations have been used to determine total populations of globular clusters and specific frequency (S N) has been evaluated for each individual galaxy. Enormous differences in S N between similar galaxies are found. In particular, S N results vary by an order of magnitude from galaxy to galaxy. Extreme cases are the following: a) at the lower end of the range, NGC 4673 has S N = 1.0 ± 0.4, a surprising value for an elliptical galaxy, but typical for spiral and irregular galaxies; b) at the upper extreme, MCG +5 −31 −063 has S N = 13.0 ± 4.2 and IC 4051 S N = 12.7 ± 3.2, and are more likely to belong to supergiant cD galaxies than to " normal " elliptical galaxies. Furthermore, NGC 4874, the central supergiant cD galaxy of the Coma cluster, also exhibits a relatively high specific frequency (S N = 9.0 ± 2.2). The other galaxies studied have S N in the range [2, 7], the mean value being S N = 5.1. No single scenario seems to account for the observed specific frequencies, so the history of each galaxy must be deduced individually by suitably combining the different models (in situ, mergers, and accretions). The possibility that Coma is formed by several subgroups is also considered. If only the galaxies of the main subgroup defined by Gurzadyan & Mazure (2001) are used, a trend in S N arises in the sense of S N being bigger in higher density regions. This result needs further confirmation.

The Globular Cluster Systems in the Coma Ellipticals. I: the Luminosity Function in Ngc 4874, and Implications for Hubble’s Constant1
We have used deep HST/WFPC2 images in V (F606W) and I (F814W) to measure the luminosity distribution of the globular clusters in NGC 4874, the central cD galaxy of the Coma cluster. We find the “turnover” point of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) to lie at V = 27.88±0.12, while the overall GCLF shape matches the standard Gaussian-like form with dispersion σV = 1.49±0.12. We use t...
متن کاملFormation Scenarios for Globular Clusters and Their Host Galaxies
This review focuses on how galaxies and their globular cluster systems form. I first discuss the now fairly convincing evidence that some globular clusters form in galaxy starbursts/mergers. One way these observations are valuable is they place important constraints on the physics of the formation of globular clusters. Moreover, it is natural to associate the typically metal-rich clusters formi...
متن کاملThe Elliptical Galaxy formerly known as the Local Group: Merging the Globular Cluster Systems
Prompted by a new catalogue of M31 globular clusters, we have collected together individual metallicity values for globular clusters in the Local Group. Although we briefly describe the globular cluster systems of the individual Local Group galaxies, the main thrust of our paper is to examine the collective properties. In this way we are simulating the dissipationless merger of the Local Group,...
متن کاملA Constraint On The Formation Of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies In The Dense Coma Cluster Core
Deep CCD photometry and positions for a new sample of ≃ 250 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Coma cluster core are analyzed. A significant color gradient is detected in their projected radial distribution, given by ∆(B–R)/∆(logRcc) = −0.08± 0.02 mag. Calibrating these dE galaxies against Galactic globular clusters yields a corresponding metallicity gradient which goes as Z ∝ R cc . Simulat...
متن کاملWide-Field Imaging from Space of Early-Type Galaxies and Their Globular Clusters
Wide-field imaging from space will reveal a wealth of information about the globular cluster systems of any galaxies in the local universe that are observed by such a mission. Individual globular clusters around galaxies in the local universe have compact sizes that are ideal for the excellent spatial resolution afforded by spacebased imaging, while systems of these globular clusters have large...
